Will: "Do you like apples?
Clark: Yeah.
Will: Well, I got her number. How do you like them apples?"
Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a complex young man. On one level he's just another lower income boy from Southie, hanging out with his friends and getting drunk while shifting from one blue collar job to another. The dialogues in this film are great, specially the conversations between Damon and Williams. Matt Damon is superbly confident as Will and grudgingly vulnerable when Will's walls crumble. Williams does some of the best work of his career, even making most of the hokey moments in their therapeutic relationship work. Minnie Driver is sweet and Damon works naturally with her, Stellan Skarsgard is solid backup and even Ben Affleck, with a fairly small role as Will's best friend, has his moments. This movie stands as a coming-of-age film, where characters are dealing with more than just their individual problems, but the demons of others around them. Will is not some autistic man, nor is he a repressed boarding school student. He's a smart man who realizes his own brilliance, but has had the pride of this knowledge slapped out of him too many times, replaced, instead, with class pride. He's scared of accepting the help he needs because it means abandoning his comfortable life.
Wonderfully written, directed and acted inspirational film for mass audiences. It works perfectly with plenty of self realisation tearful moments which don't become too sickly. Scenes of Will and his friends are the real winners, with excellent dialogue and obvious real friendships brought forth from the performances. Williams gives one of his best performances. He tones down his comedy side but allows it out of the box for maximum effect. It's a real feel good film, with smarts and emotions conflicting head on, perfectly shown in the battle between Lecturer Skarsgard and therapist Williams. The film is still lacking a little something though to make it have a real heavy impact as opposed to the slight nudge it gives off in the last few scenes.
An excellent movie!! Matt Damon you rock!
Don't remember much of this now.
Good movie, great acting and a wonderful story.
This is honestly one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life, I cried, I laughed, I smiled, I sympathized, I pitied, I felt more emotion watching this movie than any in recent memory and that is why I think this is a masterpiece.
Along with all that the cast is wonderful, the script impeccable, and the acting is amazing.
If you have yet to see this movie it should be on the top of you list for it is truly a must see.
Id watch this just for the Southie accents. a great inspiring film.
I loved the ending...it was perfect. Matt Damon portrayed the role perfectly, and it was also the first time I've seen Robin Williams in action. He is a great actor! I would reccomend this to anyone.
I love this movie so much! Despite what SOME people seem to think, it is most definately NOT a comedy. Please actually watch a movie before you try and review it, do not assume that just because Robin Williams is in it, it will be a comedy! Far from it. It is a subtle feel good movie.. it makes my cry every time!
"Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight, gonna grab some afternoon delight" - A great song to end a great movie.
