Same bowl of nuts as Meet the Parents.
OK, stay with me, this will go all over the place.
First: Don't know what the 'critics' were looking at when they reviewed this. It's a slight, seasonal, romcom w/ Vince Vaughn. What were they expecting? I know what I was, and I got it - some laughs. Vaughn and Favreau are the funniest things in the flick.
Second: Given the first, why does this thing get so preachy at times? Not everybody is cut out to be a parent. CNN has horrific stories on them almost every day. (Hell, some people shouldn't own a pet!) Why cram this down our throats? Instead, why not make the case that reasonalbly smart people or those with an even higher IQ, should be mandated to procreate. Just to help our slide into the future predicted (and God help me looks closer every day) in Idiocracy.
Third: The main crime here is that the supporting cast is awesome. But they have so little to do. Critics jumped all over this, but really; nobody twisted anybody's arm to work on this. Yes, it's a shame that there isn't more work for folks like Robert Duvall and Mary Steenburgen. Yet, they have to eat too. If I landed these people as my supporting cast I sure wouldn't say ,"No, this part is criminally underwritten for you. I couldn't possibly accept your offer to work."
Be realistic! Everyone associated with this movie is. So take it for what it really is, not what it could be. Sure push for better work from everybody and more opportunities for seasoned professionals, but don't dump it on this innocuous piece of fluff. Just enjoy it and move on.
Four Christmases is at first sight the typical X-Mas movie where a couple tries to avoid to spend X-Mas with their family but because of a series of circumstances they have no other choice to do it, the difference is that they couple will spend four Christmases in one day. The story is good with moments of very good humor and the plot is very well developed and convincing enough. The cast is very good Vince Vaughn in his typical role of a guy who isn't very attached with his family is hilarious, Reese Witherspoon performance is very funny also, she is like very natural with this kind of comedy. Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Jon Voight complements the cast with very good performances from all three. In conclusion, this movie only purpose is to entertain in this holiday season and I think it really fulfills it.
At more than 100mins, with little onscreen chemistry between Witherspoon & Vaughn, the humour is sparse and limp - "Four Christmases" is four too many.
There weren't very many people in the theater when my wife and I went to see this and it seemed that we were the only ones laughing. They were all laughs at awkward, uncomfortable, embarrassing moments, not intelligent humor. This is not a Christmas classic I'm ever going to need to see again. It was good to see Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek as Vince Vaughn's parents and Mary Steenburgen and Jon Voight as Reese Witherspoon's parents. Vince and Reese play two very immature childish, but fun-loving people who are scared of getting married and having kids because they both come from divorced families. They've avoided most real life issues and don't know each other very well, so of course they break up for a while and don't really celebrate the fourth Christmas together at her dad's (Voight) house. They both go to Daddy for advice and a little wisdom, then get back together for a very quick finale.
Ah, this was good ol' fashioned romantic-comedy-holiday fun. You really can't go wrong with Vince & Reese. I enjoyed it. (12-15-08)
