Plot: It all begins as successful Scottish playwright J.M. Barrie watches his latest play open to a ho-hum reaction among the polite society of Edwardian England. A literary genius of his times but bored by...( read more  read more... ) the same old themes, Barrie is clearly in need of some serious inspiration. Unexpectedly, he finds it one day during his daily walk with his St. Bernard Porthos in London's Kensington Gardens. There, Barrie encounters the Llewelyn Davies family: four fatherless boys and their beautiful recently widowed mother. Despite the disapproval of the boys' steely grandmother Emma du Maurier and the resentment of his own wife, Barrie befriends the family, engaging the boys in tricks, disguises, games and sheer mischief, creating play-worlds of castles and kings, cowboys and Indians, pirates and castaways. He transforms hillsides into galleon ships, sticks into mighty swords, kites into enchanted fairies and the Llewelyn Davies boys into "The Lost Boys of Neverland." From the sheer thrills and adventurousness of childhood will come Barrie's most daring and renowned masterwork, "Peter Pan." At first, his theatrical company is skeptical. While his loyal producer Charles Frohman worries he'll lose his shirt on this children's fantasy, Barrie begins rehearsals only to shock his actors with such unprecedented requests as asking them to fly across the stage, talk to fairies made out of light and don dog and crocodile costumes. Then, just as Barrie is ready to introduce the world to "Peter Pan," a tragic twist of fate will make the writer and those he loves most understand just what it means to really believe.

Johnny Depp's got a way with chirren. Marc Forrster is a solid director - I can't wait to see how he handles the new bond movie.

Edit: he handled it pretty nicely.

Finding Neverland tells the story of playwright J.M. Barrie who finds an escape from his loveless marriage to a joyless social climber and inspiration for his classic work Peter Pan in a young widow and her four sons. Both an interesting and lavishly produced period piece and love letter to the joys of the imagination, this film is a deeply charming and affecting tale judged to perfection by all concerned. The costumes and cinematography are beautiful and the representations on screen of Barrie's imaginary world are lovely to look at. The story by its nature is a little sentimental, but it never feels contrived because of sensitive performances by a quality ensemble cast. Johnny Depp is at his most likable and his understated relationship with Kate Winslet is both believable and moving. Dustin Hoffman's supporting performance as a skeptical producer also deserves a mention and he brings some light relief and laughs to an otherwise tear jerking story. But most of all it brings a sense of wonder and magic to the screen that is rarely pulled of with this level of success.

Very nice movie. I didn't watch this properly, though, and it's one I'd like to watch again in the future.

Considering the films subject matter it is acceptably juvenile. Wonderfully constructed biopic, with a rather brilliant visual flair to the fantasy sequences. Unfortunately it is denied its right to be brilliant by a worn and wasted screenplay built around a tried and tested formula. A genius writer with a spouse who just doesn't "get" him, a widower, her disapproving mother, a boy who has a lack of imagination and a man with excess of it and so on. Luckily it is also very funny, especially the young boys who seem like a family and have professional, if unrealised comic timing. Depp is his usual brilliant self, and Kate Winslet is her usual self (which works fine here). Highmore courageously takes on the most emotional material and Mitchell does a superb job of tackling the ignored wife role, even if the character is rather cliche. A mixed bag then, but one where the treats outweigh the yucky orange flavoured ones. Revels yer see.

A lot of well known names in the cast and good performances by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet but I just wasn't really interested in this film
