#9 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
This president, played by Peter Sellers, was reportedly patterned after the king of the mild-mannered politicians: 1950s presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson. Sellers' performance as an exasperated middle manager in way over his head and dealing with forces way beyond his control is an understated comic masterpiece.
President Speak: "I find this very difficult to understand. I was under the impression that I was the only one in authority to order the use of nuclear weapons."
Intended as a serious war exploration of the cold-war, but the super-powers' mad policy (Mutually Assured Destruction) was so absurd, it had to be comedy
Fantastic, without a doubt my favorite Kubrick movie. Watched this again on 11/11/08 and added it to my extremely small collection of movies that I actually own.
Meh. I know it's considered a "classic," but I couldn't stay awake so I had to rewind for part of it. Still, it was worth it for the classic line: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room."
please make me a drink of green alcohol and rain water and help yourself to whatever you'd like
It is a bizarre, quirky movie which still maintains satire of the cold war. Peter Sellers delivers multiple roles with stellar acting, and supporting actors such as George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden fair no worse. Stanley Kubrik directed this movie to near perfection, as well. I especially remember the final line of the movie, Dr. Strangelove's memorable line: "Mein Furher! I can walk!".
Amazing satire and great dark comedy.
I hate every Stanley Kubrick movie ever made- EXCEPT THIS ONE. At LEAST the narrative structure makes SENSE... (don't even get me started on the acid-trip ending to 2001)
"MEIN FUHRER! I CAN WALK!"
A masterpiece of satire, paranoia and straight comedy. One of the all-time classics with a great cast and many memorable moments. Sellers is magnificent.
Kubrick's great 1964 tragicomedy about superpowers on the nuclear brink continues to fascinate new generations of moviegoers, as its frequent reissues attest.
An absolutely hilarious and brilliant satire in which Kubrick's assured and precise direction serves, for once, to make an incredibly entertaing film as well as a smart one.
