Plot: From the director of "The Crow," an atmospheric melange of styles and substance about aliens, night and unspeakable acts. Interesting, but more than a bit addled.

you dont understand how long i waited to see this movie and i was not disappointed
This review is for the director's cut:
An enigmatic noir/science fiction/fantasy that has impressive visuals (especially set design), a plot that was way ahead of it's time and a phenomenal score from Trevor Jones.
It's now obvious where Matrix writers' the Wachowski brothers got there inspiration from as there are many parallels between the two.
Also Richard (Riff Raff - A Handyman) O'Brien gives a stand out performace as the creepy, soft spoken Mr. Hand.![]()
A great fusion of noir and sci/fi, with an interesting story. A shame that the final act is reduced to a CGI extravaganza nerd battle. That and the weak lead actor keeps this from being even better.
I was only interested in seeing just HOW similar it was to "The Matrix" and I suppose it is if you were to nitpick. But just because it was released earlier does not make it better. Sure the ideas are superbly original and inventive but the ending - like the acting and the crappy use of CGI - SUCKS. Also, this movie "STEALS" from Plato's Allegory of the Cave, but I ain't bitchin', now, am I?
In almost ten years, this movie has not lost its appeal. It has an original screenplay and its simply astonishing in many aspects.
The cinematography is dark and beautiful with many wonderful scenes. The film has a noir feeling to it. Dark and twisted but we like 'em like that.
Like I said, the visuals are great but the effects don't take advantage of the plot, like in so many other scifi movies.
Alex Proyas came an instant favourite of mine. After The Crow, Dark City and I, Robot, I couldn't stop wondering, is this guy a genius or what?
Wow - real Blade Runner style cinematography. Very beautiful throughout the entire movie. Interesting story line - could have ended better.
